NEWS College To Honor Retired
Manhattan College will present Frederic V. Salerno '65, retired vice chairman and chief financial officer of Verizon, with the De La Salle Medal at the College's annual fundraising dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008. The ceremony will be held at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. A native New Yorker, Salerno joined New York Telephone in 1965 and served in the telecommunications industry for 37 years. Sesquicentennial Campaign Manhattan College recently announced the completion of its Sesquicentennial Campaign, after having raised more than $160 million during six years in the largest capital campaign in the 154-year history of the College. Announced publicly in January 2003, the Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign, with an initial goal of $150 million, was the most ambitious development program in Manhattan College history. It began in July 2001 and was officially completed this past June, though promises of new money have continued, and several potential gifts are still being finalized. Read
ON CAMPUS Manhattan College Honored at
Manhattan College's 11-student delegation was honored with one of six performance awards at the National Model United Nations-D.C. Conference, which was held from Nov. 2-4 on the campus of The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Read
Dr. Francis Taylor Deceased at 82 Dr. Francis B. Taylor '44, professor emeritus of mathematics and computer science and a member of the Manhattan College community for more than half a century, passed away on Nov. 16 at the age of 82. Taylor joined the College in 1947 as an instructor in mathematics and was part of the faculty until his retirement in 1990. A generous supporter of the College, the Francis B. Taylor Medal for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is awarded annually during Commencement exercises.

FACULTY Biology Professor Awarded Grant To Improve Long Island Sound Marine biologist Dr. Michael Judge has long been fascinated with water flow and animal behavior. For his latest project, Manhattan's associate professor of biology blends these interests to study if and how fish larvae move in areas of low dissolved oxygen in the Long Island Sound. Read
Faculty and Staff Accomplishments Dr. Nada Marie Assaf-Anid, professor of chemical engineering, recently published two peer-reviewed journal articles: “Curbing the Greenhouse Effect by Carbon Dioxide Adsorption with Zeolite 13X” and “Sustainable Engineering for the Future: A Laboratory Experiment on Carbon Dioxide Adsorption from a Carbon Dioxide-Nitrogen Stream” in AIChE and the International Journal of Chemical Engineering Education , respectively. Dr. Bruce Liby, associate professor of physics, and Ryan Scholl '08, presented the paper “Determining the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion of Cooper with a Michelson Interferometer” at the International Student Research Conference at The City College of New York from Oct. 30-31. Dr. Christoph Lienert, associate professor of physical education and human performance, delivered the keynote speech Adapted Physical Activity: Transcending Boundaries at the Fourth International Mediterranean Sports Science Congress in Antalya, Turkey, from Nov. 9-11. ALUMNI Florida Alumni Greet
Vice President for Advancement Thomas Mauriello, new Alumni Director Ellen Kiernan, and Assistant Director Thomas McCarthy recently traveled to Florida to host a series of luncheons. Among the stops were Bonita Springs, Naples, Port St. Lucie and Sarasota. Each event was met with an enthusiastic response by supportive alumni. Theology on Tap
The office of mission and the alumni office will be hosting a Theology on Tap session Thursday, Dec. 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room, Thomas Hall. Off to a 3-3 start, the Manhattan College men's basketball team is ready to embark on a December schedule that includes road games against Boston University, Princeton and Big East Conference member Rutgers. The women's squad begins the month in the Brown Basketball Classic and also battles Siena and Villanova. Read
Baseball Squad To Welcome Manhattan College's baseball program has secured the second best 2007 recruiting class in the Northeast, according to Baseball America. The Jaspers are the only Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference program on the list. Read
