NEWS New Residence Hall To House The class of 2012 has yet to step on campus, but arrangements are well underway for their arrival. Later this year, Manhattan College will unveil its new residence hall, East Hill Tower II, which a group of Jaspers will soon call home. Ground was broken on East Hill Tower II in December 2006, and the state-of-the-art residence hall is on schedule to be completed in July. The attractive structure that overlooks Van Cortlandt Park will eventually provide a safe home for some 550 students, which brings residential housing for East Hill and its twin, Horan Hall, to 1,270. College To Honor Frederic V. Salerno '65 at De La Salle Dinner Manhattan College will present Frederic V. Salerno '65, retired vice chairman and chief financial officer of Verizon, with the De La Salle Medal at the College's annual fundraising dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 16. The ceremony will be held at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. Thanks to the tremendous support and efforts of Salerno, this year's dinner is on schedule to be one of the most successful in history. ON CAMPUS College To Participate in Focus Manhattan College will be among the thousands of universities, high schools and other institutions nationwide to participate in Focus the Nation events on Thursday, Jan. 31. Focus the Nation is a national educational initiative on global warming solutions for America that will culminate that day with symposia held simultaneously throughout the country. Recent Grad Wins Prestigious Marianna Kowalczyk '07, who earned a bachelor's in environmental engineering with cum laude distinction, was one of only 11 students nationwide that were each awarded a $20,000 scholarship for graduate school by the Environmental Engineers of the Future. She entered the University of California at Berkeley's master's program in environmental engineering this past fall. Read

FACULTY Adjunct Professer Jeanette Brown Jeanette Brown, an adjunct professor of environmental engineering at Manhattan College, has been selected by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) to serve as the prestigious Kappe Lecturer in 2008. Brown, who teaches wastewater treatment plant design, received her master's from the College. The Kappe Lecture series was inaugurated by AAEE in 1989 to share knowledge of today's practitioners with tomorrow's environmental engineers. It is an annually recurring series of lectures presented on college campuses during the fall academic term. Read
Faculty and Staff Accomplishments Dr. Nada Marie Assaf-Anid, professor of chemical engineering, has been nominated programming chair of the environmental division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and will lead the programming of all sessions and symposia during the society's Philadelphia Centennial in fall 2008. Claudia Setzer, professor of religious studies, presented her paper “A Pinch of Common Sense: Nineteenth Century Feminist Biblical Interpretation” at the American Academy of Religion's annual meeting in San Diego, Calif., this past November. Dr. Mohammad Naraghi, professor of mechanical engineering, organized four sessions on Innovative Methods in Mechanical Engineering Education at the International Mechanical Congress in Seattle, Wash., this past November. Dr. Kevin Farley, professor of civil and environmental engineering, was a featured speaker at the Contamination Assessment and Reduction Project Conference at The National Museum of the American Indian in New York City on Nov. 29, 2007. Dr. Helene Tyler, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science, presented her research on “Sequences of Reflection Functors and the Preprojective Component of a Valued Quiver” at the 12th International Conference on Representatives of Algebras this past summer at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. Dr. John Mahony, professor of environmental engineering, and Dr. Robert Mutch, adjunct professor of environmental engineering, presented the paper “A Study of Tritium in Municipal Solid and Waste and Gas” at the Eighth International Conference on Tritium Science and Technology in Rochester, N.Y., this past September. Dr. Kathryn Weld, associate professor of mathematics and computer science, attended the national summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and presented the paper “Graphically Abelian Groups” in the special session on graph theory. Dr. Anirban De, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, published the paper “Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Settlement: Postclosure Perspectives” in the June 2007 issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering . Manhattan College Basketball Weekly To Return This January Manhattan College Basketball Weekly will return for its second season on Friday, Jan. 11 at 4:00 p.m. SportsNet New York (SNY). The program gives Manhattan fans an inside look at the happenings surrounding Jasper hoops and other sports on campus. In each episode, coach Barry Rohrssen will review the previous week, as well as what lies ahead for the Jaspers. In New York City, SNY is broadcast on Channel 26 for Time Warner Cable subscribers, Channel 60 on Cablevision and Channel 625 on DIRECTV.
