NEWS William Baker To Speak William F. Baker, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Educational Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), will deliver the keynote address at Manhattan College's 2008 Commencement on Sunday, May 18. During the ceremony, Baker will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Baker has been head of EBC since 1987. Manhattan College Hosts Some 750 members of the Manhattan College community attended the Focus the Nation events held on campus on Thursday, Jan. 31. With more than 1,500 educational institutions participating, Focus the Nation, a nationwide global warming initiative, was billed as the largest ever “teach-in” in the United States. Manhattan College hosted numerous seminars and events throughout the day, including a panel discussion with local elected officials Councilman Oliver Koppell, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (pictured, left) and State Senator José Serrano '94 (pictured, right). College To Host Undergraduate Mathematics Conference Manhattan College will host the third annual Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference on Saturday, April 5. The goal of the conference is to offer undergraduates the opportunity to attend and actively participate in a professional meeting while encouraging mathematical conversation among students. In the past two years, the conference has drawn participants from colleges throughout the tri-state area, New England and Pennsylvania. This year's keynote address will be delivered by Carl Pomerance, professor of mathematics at Dartmouth College . FACULTY Engineering Professor Presents Dr. Robert Sharp, professor of civil and environmental engineering, was the co-author of two research papers presented at the 80th New York Water Environmental Annual Meeting. Sharp is the Donald J. O'Connor Endowed Faculty Fellow of Environmental Engineering. Faculty and Staff Accomplishments Dr. Juliana Gilheany, adjunct associate professor of history, will deliver the lecture Highlights of Modern United States Foreign Relations on Wednesday, April 2 at Fordham College of Liberal Studies, Lincoln Center. The talk is part of the College at 60 lecture series. Dr. Zella Moore, assistant professor of psychology, has published the peer-reviewed journal article “Evidence-based Interventions for the Treatment of Eating Disorders” in the Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology . Dr. Christoph Lienert, associate professor of physical education and human performance, recently authored the chapter A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Inclusive Physical Education in the book International, Inclusive, Interdisciplinary: Perspectives of a Modern Sport Science . Pipes & Drums To March in the The Manhattan College Pipes & Drums, an award-winning college pipe band, will march in the 30th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Naples, Fla., on Saturday, March 15. Ambassador Ted McNamara '69 To The New York City Alumni Club will be hosting a networking reception at the Mutual of America Building (330 Park Avenue) from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2008. The event will feature a presentation by Ambassador Thomas E. McNamara '62. McNamara has extensive diplomatic experience in political-military affairs, terrorism, narcotics, and the regions of Latin America, Middle East, Africa, Europe and Russia. President George W. Bush recently appointed him to program manager for the information sharing environment. He reports directly to the director of national intelligence and is responsible for implementing basic reforms in the management of information throughout our government. SPORTS Hoops Squads Set The Manhattan College men's basketball team finished the regular season 11-18 and will play ninth-seeded Saint Peter's in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament on Friday, March 7 in Albany , N.Y. The women's team (15-14) opens MAAC tournament play earlier that afternoon against the No. 5 seed Peahens of Saint Peter's at 3:30 p.m. A complimentary hospitality suite for all Jaspers fans will be available in the Webster's Corner Meeting Room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Albany from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Read
Jaspers Selected Second in The Manhattan College baseball team has been predicted to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season, according to a preseason poll of the league's coaches. Manhattan received 67 first-place votes to finish just four points behind Canisius. The Jaspers (1-6) play their home opener on Wednesday, March 12 against the University at Albany. Read
