NEWS George Magovern '45 To Speak George Magovern '45, M.D., retired chairman of the department of surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., will deliver the keynote address at Manhattan College's 2008 Spring Commencement on Wednesday, May 21. During the ceremony, Magovern will receive an honorary Doctor of Science. Magovern did his surgical residency at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York and at New York Medial Center (Downstate), followed by his residency in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at George Washington University. Voices from Darfur Refugees from Sudan's western region of Darfur will tell their stories as Manhattan College hosts Voices from Darfur, a national speaking tour sponsored by the Save Darfur Coalition. The event will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Sale and His Brothers. It is free and open to the public. Voices from Darfur features a short documentary film followed by personal accounts of the genocide from survivors. Read.
ON CAMPUS College To Host The Manhattan College student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) will host the 2008 AIChE Mid-Atlantic Regional Student Conference from April 11-13. Highlights of the conference include engineering and career development workshops, three major competitions (Chem-E-Car, Paper and Poster) and an awards banquet and dinner. FACULTY Manhattan College Professor Voted Dr. Shawn Ladda, associate professor and chair of the department of physical education and human performance, has been voted president-elect of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). Ladda has served on the NAGWS Executive Board and is currently the chair of the National Pathfinder Award Committee, which honors women who have demonstrated continuous dedication to advocacy, recruitment and enhancement of girls and women in sports and sport leadership in their states. Faculty and Staff Accomplishments Dr. Robert Geraci, assistant professor of religious studies, presented his research Religion, Spirituality and the Avatar in virtual reality at the Web site Extropia Core on March 15. Dr. John Jeris, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering, was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA) on Feb. 4 during its 80th annual meeting. Natalia Imperatori-Lee, assistant professor of religious studies, attended the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Religious Ed ucation Congress from Feb. 29-March 2. ALUMNI Ambassador Ted McNamara '62 To The New York City Alumni Club will be hosting a networking reception at the Mutual of America Building (330 Park Avenue) from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2008. The event will feature a presentation by Ambassador Thomas McNamara '62, who has extensive diplomatic experience in political military affairs, terrorism, narcotics and the regions of Latin America, Middle East, Africa, Europe and Russia. President George W. Bush recently appointed him to program manager for the information sharing environment. He reports to the director of national intelligence and is responsible for implementing basic reforms in the management of information throughout our government. The Manhattan College Pipes and Drums led two contingents of Jaspers in a pair of St. Patrick's Day parades last month. The Pipes and Drums made a special appearance this year in the Naples, Fla. parade (pictured above) on March 15. The large showing of Jaspers was led by Jim Connors '57. On March 17, the band made its annual appearance in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade leading hundres of Jaspers, family, and friends down Fifth Avenue.

SPORTS Baseball Squad After spending all but one game of its season away from home thus far, the Manhattan College baseball team begins its first home stand of the year on Saturday, April 5 with a three-game series against MAAC rival Siena. Niagara visits for three games April 12-13. Read.
Lombardi Receives Manhattan College senior catcher/infielder Dom Lombardi was named the MAAC Baseball Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks on March 25. Lombardi anchored the Jaspers' offensive attack in a three-game series against Rider, batting .700 with three RBIs and a 1.200 slugging percentage. Read.
Convery Named MAAC Women's Manhattan College freshman attacker Tara Convery was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week in women's lacrosse on March 10. Convery received the honor after tallying three goals in the Lady Jaspers' 17-13 victory over Lafayette University. She has 12 goals and 13 points entering Friday's game with Fairfield. Read.
