College Set To Host 166th
Undergraduate Commencement

2007 Commencement

Manhattan College will award close to 700 degrees in some 40 major fields of study from its five schools in arts, business, education, engineering and science at its 166th Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 18. The ceremony will be held in Draddy Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. Read. The College's Spring (Graduate) Commencement will take place on Wednesday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. Read. College Begins
Search for 19th President

Manhattan College will commence its search for its next president this summer as Br. Thomas J. Scanlan, F.S.C., prepares to step down from the position in June 2009, after nearly 22 years of unparalleled leadership. The firm Isaacson, Miller has been hired to conduct an extensive national search, with Eugene McGrath '63, trustee emeritus and retired chaiman & CEO of Con Ed ison, serving as chairman of the search committee. Br. Scanlan, the College's 18th and longest-tenured president, was inaugurated on October 29, 1987. To read the presidential job posting, click Here.

Columbia Work to Develop Engines
Powered by Vegetable Oil

Manhattan College students have joined their peers at Columbia University and The City College of New York on the BELT project. BELT, for Biofuel Engine Longevity Test, has brought the three New York City institutions together to examine the long-term effects of running a diesel engine on biofuels. Each school is researching a Lister diesel engine running for 500 hours on vegetable oil. Dr. Pejman Akbari, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, is serving as a mentor to the Manhattan College students involved in the project. Read.

 

College To Host 27th Annual
Engineering Awareness Program

Manhattan College's Engineering Awareness Program, which aims to introduce high school students to potential careers in the various fields of engineering, will be held for the 27th straight year in July. The program is designed for minority and female high school students in science, engineering and SAT preparation at no cost to them. It is meant to introduce students to a wide range of engineering-related career options with some emphasis on civil engineering. School of Education's Graduate Division Announces New Master's Program in Mental Health Counseling

Manhattan College's graduate school of education has launched a new Master of Science program in mental health counseling. The primary objective of the program is to train practitioners in assessment and intervention in settings such as mental health centers, hospitals, community agencies and private practice. Read.

CMSA Director's Experiences Detailed
in National Campus Ministry Newsletter

Lois Harr, director of Manhattan College's campus ministry and social action and an adjunct professor of religious studies, will have an article published in the June issue of Crossroads, the national newsletter of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association. The article details integrating her work as a campus minister with being a certified fair trade ambassador for Catholic Relief Services. To read the article prior to its publication, click Here.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. William Merriman, dean of the school of education, and Brother Augustine Nicoletti, assistant professor of education, recently edited Understanding and Teaching Today's Students , which was released in March at the National Catholic Ed ucational Association Annual Convention in Indianapolis.

Dr. Jay Friedenberg , associate professor of psychology, and Dr. Bruce Liby, associate professor of physics, have published the article “Perceiving the Center of Three-Body Displays: The Role of Size-Ratio, Symmetry, Elongation and Gravity” in The Open Behavioral Science Journal. Dr. Anirban De, assistant professor of civil, co-chaired a session on Earthquakes and Blasting at the GeoCongress 2008 conference organized by the American Society of Chemical Engineers in New Orleans, La., this past March.

Dr. Robert Geraci, assistant professor of religious studies, published the essay “Apocalyptic AI: Religion and the Promise of Artifical Intelligence” in the spring issue of The Journal of the American Academy of Religion .

Dr. Nicholas DeLillo, professor of mathematics and computer science, is a co-author of the new monograph “Implementation of Rotations in AVL Trees Using java.until.” It appears in the Technical Report series, number 248, March 2008 of the Ivan G. Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems, Pace University.

Saratoga Day at the Races

Make plans to join us for our annual day at the races in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. with sunset racing beginning with a 2:45 p.m. post time. The $95 cost per person includes admission to the track, a program and a buffet lunch. Join us later in the evening for a reception, hosted by Bill Chandler '70, at the Inn at Saratoga at 231 Broadway. Reservations must be made in advance and may be completed online, Here. For overnight hotel accommodations, it is highly recommended that arrangements be made in advance.

Baseball Squad Enters Home Stretch

With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Manhattan College baseball team is fighting for position and seeding in the upcoming MAAC tournament, which begins on May 22 in Trenton, N.J. The Jaspers play their next four contests at Van Cortlandt Park, including a three-game set against conference foe Saint Peters this weekend. Read.

 

Donnelly Named MAAC
Softball Rookie of the Week

Melissa Donnelly

Freshman pitcher/infielder Melissa Donnelly was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on April 22. Donnelly pitched in three games, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.69 ERA while allowing only six hits over 12 innings. She batted .333 and twice drove in a pair of runs in games against Iona and Rider. Women's Soccer

Head women's soccer coach Sean Driscoll announced Manhattan College's 2008 team captains on April 22. Seniors Brittany Duhamel and Viviane Masters, along with juniors Jill Beauchamp and Courtney McMahon are prepared to lead the Lady Jaspers in their quest for the program's first MAAC championshp. Fagerlund Wins 100 Meter Hurdles
at Yale Springtime Invitational

Manhattan College freshman Siri Fagerlund continued to show she is one of the region's top 100 meter hurdlers on April 27, taking first at the Yale Springtime Invitational held in New Haven , Conn. She ran the event in 14.47 seconds. Read.

 

Antoine Pearson Selected
to All-MET Third Team

Manhattan College sophomore point guard Antoine Pearson was named to the 2007-08 All-Met Third Team for Division I men's college basketball during the MET Basketball Writers Association's 75th Annual awards banquet at Giants Stadium in April. Pearson led the Jaspers with 12.2 points per game. Read.
