College Honors William F. Baker
at 166th Commencement

Manhattan College honored William F. Baker, Ph.D., president emeritus of Educational Broadcasting Corporation, at the 166th Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 18, in Draddy Gymnasium. During the ceremony, Baker was presented with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. In his keynote address, Baker told the graduates, “You are fortunate to have been educated at Manhattan College and to be in New York City gives you a real advantage in a complex world.” Read. Holocaust Resource Center Continues
To Grow Under New Leadership

Dr. Jeff Horn, associate professor of history and the new director of Manhattan College's Holocaust Resource Center (HRC), has a clearly defined plan for the future: to grow the “resource” component of the center. A public resource room is one of Horn's long-term goals, while an increased Internet presence also is on the horizon. In addition, the center's board of consulters held its first session this past February. Read.

LEAP Program Comes
to Manhattan College

Manhattan College always has been committed to educating the underserved, those who might not have had the opportunity to attend college because of financial reasons. But now, the College is helping to prepare another group of underserved students achieve their goals of a degree. Due to popular demand, the Liberal Ed ucation for Arts Professionals (LEAP) started a New York extension in cooperation with Manhattan College. Read.

 

Veggie Car Runs Coast to Coast

A 3,200-mile trip, $14,000, a vintage technology resurrected as trendy and one ambitious engineer recently fueled the buzz around Manhattan College. The big question on everyone's mind, including the engineer, Eric Spargimino '06, was: Would he make it? “It” refers to his cross-country trip to California in a 1974, biodiesel-run Mercedes, known around campus as the veggie car. His destination was the Water Environment Federation's annual conference. Read.

 

College To Host 27th Annual
Engineering Awareness Program

Manhattan College's Engineering Awareness Program, which aims to introduce high school students to potential careers in the various fields of engineering, with an emphasis on civil engineering, will be held for the 27th straight year in July. The program is designed for minority and female high school students in science, engineering and SAT preparation at no cost to them. Student Recycling Project
Aims for Green Campus

Some environmentally minded students gave the Manhattan College campus community something to think about during winter break. This past December, several students from an Environmental Politics class taught by Dr. Pamela Chasek, associate professor of government and director of the international studies program, presented an instructive discussion on recycling that included research and recommendations from a semester-long project. Br. Raymond Meagher, F.S.C., assistant professor of education, authored the cover story “Teaching in the 21st Century: ‘Plain Vanilla Just Won't Make It!'” for the spring 2008 issue of Vistas, Manhattan College's school of education's annual journal. The article can be read Here.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Jonathan Hartman, assistant professor of marketing, and Dr. Yassir Samra, assistant professor of management, have co-authored the following papers: “Impact of Personal Values and Innovativeness on Hedonic and Utilitarian Aspects of Web-Use: An Empirical Study among United States Teenagers” in the March 2008 issue of the International Journal of Management, and “Where Does an Entrepreneur Have the Best Shot? The Effects of Market Stage and Concentration Ratio on New Venture Entry in the Healthcare Sector” in the Business Journal for Entrepreneuers.

Dr. Reza Jazar, associate professor of mechanical engineering, recently published Vehicle Dynamics: Theory and Application. The book is written for senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students in mechanical engineering.

Dr. Thelma Baxter, assistant professor of education, published the article “Writing is Everyone's Business” in the April/May 2008 issue of Momentum: The Official Journal of the National Catholic Ed ucational Association.

Dr. Zella Moore, assistant professor of psychology, has published the book The Psychology of Enhancing Human Performance: The Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) Approach to Performance Enhancement: A Step-by-Step Guide.

Reunion Weekend 2008

Earlier this month, Manhattan College welcomed home alumni from classes spanning the last 65 years to celebrate the139th Alumni Reunion Weekend. Trips to the Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens and Arthur Avenue were well attended as was the Young Alumni Celebration, all new additions to the program. A highlight of the weekend was the Saturday evening clambake on the Quadrangle, with approximately 300 people in attendance. Special Golden and Silver Anniversary celebrations were strongly represented by the class of 1958 and the class of 1983. “It was déjà vu all over again,” said Tom Bradley '58. “Visiting with the ‘older' gang, reliving war stories… it will always be remembered.” For more information on obtaining photos, please check the alumni website which will advise you when they will become available. The alumni relations team thanks everyone who attended and made the weekend a wonderful memory for everyone.

 

Alumni Yankee Game

Join your fellow Jaspers as the New York Yankees take on the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, July 2 at 7:05 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available for the game in this last season at historic Yankee Stadium. For more information and to register, click Here.

 

Saratoga Day at the Races

Make plans to join us for our annual day at the races in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Friday, July 25 at 1:30 p.m. Sunset racing begins with a 2:45 p.m. post time. The $95 cost per person includes admission to the track, program and buffet lunch. Join us later in the evening for a reception, hosted by Bill Chandler '70, at the Inn at Saratoga at 231 Broadway. Reservations must be made in advance and may be completed online Here. For overnight hotel accommodations, it is highly recommended that they be made in advance.

 

Construction Industry Golf Outing

This year's Construction Industry Golf Outing benefitting the Joe Van Etten '57 Civil Engineering Scholarship will be held on Monday, August 4, 2008 at Lake Isle Country Club. For more information on how to get involved in the outing and to register, click Here.

 

Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival

Manhattan College is offering its alumni the unique chance to experience Shakespeare at its finest at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival's August 15 production of Twelfth Night. The cost of $30 is inclusive of admission to the performance as well as a picnic of wine, cheese and sandwiches on the beautiful grounds of Boscobel in Garrison, N.Y. overlooking the Hudson River and West Point . We encourage you to bring your own picnicking items as well. The park opens at 6:00 p.m. two hours prior to show time. Running of the Purse
at Monmouth Racetrack

The 34th annual running of the Manhattan College purse at Monmouth Park Racetrack will be held on Thursday, August 21 in Oceanport, N.J. Memorial Golf Outing

Manhattan College alumni and friends are invited to participate in the Eighth Annual JKO Memorial Golf Classic on Long Island on September 15. The outing benefits the James K. Alumni Travel Program

Jaspers Eye U.S. Olympic Trials

With his recent triple jump of 15.85 meters achieved at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships, Manhattan College senior Dexter Jules '09 is in line to qualify for the United States Olympic Trials to be held in Eugene, Ore., beginning June 27. Already qualified for the trials is Manhattan alum Thomas “Jake” Freeman '04 in the hammer throw. Read.

 

Men's Hoops Welcomes New
Coordinator of Basketball Operations

Council

New York City native C.J. Council has joined Manhattan College as the men's basketball program's coordinator of operations. Council spent last season as a graduate assistant under Norm Roberts at St. John's University. A graduate of St. John's, Council also served as an assistant junior varsity coach for six seasons at his alma mater Christ the King High School in Queens. Read.

 

Baseball's Dan Forman Named
To Freshman All-American Team

Manhattan College 's Dan Forman '11 was named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger's Freshman All-American Baseball Team by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on June 4. The left-handed pitcher went 8-4 with 81 strikeouts and a 4.70 ERA this past season for the Jaspers, who finished the campaign with an impressive 31-20-1 record. Read.

 

Three Jasper Track and
Field Stars Honored

Track

Manhattan College hammer throwers Paul Peulich '08 and Seid Mujanovic '10, and triple jumper Dexter Jules '09, have been named to the East All-Region Team by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The three were honored based on their performances at the NCAA East Region Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Tallahassee, Fla., in early June. Read.
