Thomas J. Heffernan ’68 to Receive Honorary Doctorate at Fall Honors Convocation

Dr. Thomas J. Heffernan ’68, Ph.D., who holds the Kenneth Curry Professorship at the University of Tennessee (UT), will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Manhattan College’s Fall Honors Convocation on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 4:00 p.m in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. During the ceremony, nearly 150 seniors will be recognized for their academic excellence and inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society. Induction into Epsilon Sigma Pi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be earned by a Manhattan College student. A native of New York City, Heffernan is a member of the departments of English and religious studies and the program in Medieval Studies at UT. Read.

 

College Debuts New Lasallian Community Section on Web

Lasallian

As an institution founded in the Lasallian tradition, Manhattan College’s faculty, staff, administrators and students continue to identify and be inspired by the Lasallian mission. To further that mission and to better educate current and future members of the Manhattan community, the College recently launched a Lasallian Community section on its Web site Here. The site provides information about Lasallian events on campus and beyond, links to the global and U.S. Lasallian community of which Manhattan College is part, and information about the College’s current Christian Brothers. New visitors or long-time members of the College community are invited to further explore Manhattan’s Lasallian heritage on the new Web pages, and the site will continue to grow with additional and updated information in the coming months.

 

President Scanlan Honored
by Irish Echo

Brother Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C., Manhattan College’s longest-tenured president, was named one of Irish Echo’s Best of the Bronx 2008 in the newspaper’s Sept. 3-9 issue. Br. Thomas, who will retire from his office in June after nearly 22 years of unparalleled leadership, was one of 25 honorees celebrated by Irish Echo at a gathering in the Museum of the City of New York on Thursday, Sept. 4. Others recognized included Peter Quinn ’69, a noted author of such works as Banished Children of Eve and Looking for Jimmy: A Search for Irish America. Staff Convocation To Honor
Dedicated Employees

At the annual staff convocation, which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20 in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers, members of the College community will be recognized for their 25 years of service.  Neptali Sanchez (physical plant) and Ann Scanlon (HEOP) will be honored. Pulitzer Prize Winner
Samantha Power To Speak at Holocaust Resource Center

Power

Pulitzer Prize winner Samantha Power, who spent 2005-06 working in the office of Sen. Barack Obama, will deliver the first Frederick M. Schweitzer Lecture on the Holocaust at Manhattan College on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. Power, the Anna Lindh Professor of Practice and Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, will deliver the lecture Can Genocide Be Stopped? American Foreign Policy in an Age of Terror. It is based on her recent book Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World (2008), a biography of the United Nations envoy killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2003. The event, presented by the Holocaust Resource Center, is free and open to the public. Read.

 

Study Abroad Fair Scheduled for Oct. 8

Are you a student who plans to study abroad? Want to know more about the country you will call home for a semester or a year? The study abroad fair will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 4:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. Why not start learning about and immersing yourself in a foreign culture here on campus? Do you know that there are 54 international students in all five schools of Manhattan College? Perhaps one of them sits next to you in class. Speak to them and ask all you want to know about their country and culture. Also present our country to them. Jesuit Priest John Dear
To Speak at College

John Dear

John Dear, a Jesuit priest and former executive director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, will speak at Manhattan College and sign copies of his autobiography on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 4:00 p.m. in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library. The event, sponsored by the College’s peace studies program, is free and open to the public. A Persistent Peace: One Man’s Struggle for a Nonviolent World was released this past August, and copies will be available for sale during the event. The book follows Dear’s decades-long journey and spiritual growth, including his unpopular actions before government officials, military personnel and even hostile representatives of the Church. The New York Times’ David Gonzalez
To Visit College As Part of Hispanic Heritage Month

The New York Times metro reporter David Gonzalez will speak at Manhattan College as part of Hispanic Heritage Month on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 12:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event, sponsored by Manhattan’s diversity committee and the communication department, is open to the entire College community. Since his return to New York in early 2004 after serving since mid-1999 as the Times’ Caribbean and Central America bureau chief, Gonzalez has written the biweekly “Citywide” feature, which explores the social, cultural and economic changes in the city’s neighborhoods. His topics have ranged from unexpected effects of the subprime lending crisis to the extraordinary lives of ordinary New Yorkers. College To Welcome Comic Book Theorist Scott McCloud

Cartoonist and comic book theorist Scott McCloud will speak at Manhattan College on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. McCloud’s talk is the fall semester’s scheduled college writing lecture to accompany the Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, a wise, funny and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. McCloud is the author of Understanding Comics (1993), a 215-page book about comics that has been translated into more than 16 languages. He also has written Reinventing Comics (2000), a more controversial look at comics revolutions in art, culture and technology, and Making Comics (2006), an extensive look at comics storytelling techniques. Costello Lecture Features Johns Hopkins Professor

Dr. David Bell, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities and dean of the faculty of arts and sciences at Johns Hopkins University, will deliver the seventh annual Costello Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. Bell is an internationally recognized scholar and has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Leo Gershoy Prize from the American Historical Association for this 2001 book The Cult of the Nation in France: Inventing Nationalism, 1680-1800. The lecture is named for Br. Casimir Gabriel Costello, F.S.C., former dean of the College. Bell’s lecture “The Culture of War and Peace in Europe, 1750-1815” is sponsored by the history department and the school of arts. It is open to the entire Manhattan College community, including alumni. Education Professor Honored
by Alpha Kappa Alpha

Dr. Thelma Baxter, assistant professor of education, was honored on Sept. 20 by the Bergen County (N.J.) Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc., for her outstanding education career. Nine women were honored for each facet of AKA’s national program, including Faye Wattleton, CEO of Planned Parenthood. The sorority was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., as the first of its kind for black women. It currently has 150,000 members throughout the world. Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Patricia Sheridan, assistant professor of business law, published the article “Determining Domicile of Nursing Home Residents” in the fall 2008 issue of the North East Journal of Legal Studies. She also participated in the panel discussion “Surefire Techniques that Work in Teaching Business Law Topics” at the annual meeting of the North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business on May 2-4 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Dr. William Merriman, professor and dean of the school of education, and Dr. Jeff Cherubini, assistant professor of physical education and performance, presented the paper “The Latino Millennial Student” at the National Summit: A Just Education in Underserved Communities, in Philadelphia on July 10th.

Dr. Robert Geraci, assistant professor of religious studies, and Dr. Stephen Kaplan, professor of religious studies, accompanied five Manhattan College students to a presentation by author Michael Novak and Heather Mac Donald, the John M. Olin fellow at the Manhattan Institute. The event, hosted at the Harvard Club by the John Templeton Foundation Book Forum, addressed the topic of religious doubt and the Christian response to the new atheist movement.

Manhattan College welcomed many new employees during the summer and into the start of the fall semester, including Tim Ward, dean of the school of engineering; Paula D’loria, director of enrollment management operations; Pamela Poe, assistant professor of communication; Susan Bronson, director of corporate and foundation relations; and Eric Huang, assistant professor of chemical engineering. Manhattan College Milestones

Congratulations to several full-time and part-time members of the College community who have celebrated a recent service anniversary. Brother Robert Berger, vice president for student life, recently marked his 20th anniversary at Manhattan College. Individuals who celebrated their 45-year anniversary in September include Nicholas De Lillo and Thomas Smith, professors of mathematics and computer science, and Peter Heller, professor of government. Representatives from more than 100 companies converge on campus on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. in Draddy Gymnasium to speak with interested students and alumni about job opportunities, internships and co-op positions. Open House Brunch
for Prospective Students

Alumni are welcome to bring college-bound high school and transfer students to attend a complimentary brunch hosted by our alumni society on Sunday, Oct. 26. Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers, and brunch will be in the newly renovated Dante’s Den in Thomas Hall at 11:00 a.m. Reservations are mandatory as we are limited in seating; no walk-ins are permitted. Fall Networking Reception

Online registration is now available for the New York City Club fall networking reception on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 6:00-9:00 p.m at UBS (1285 Sixth Avenue, 14th floor). The reception features Thomas D. O'Malley '63, chairman of the Manhattan College board of trustees and chairman of Petroplus Holdings A.G., Europe’s largest independent oil refiner and wholesaler, with refineries in the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France and Switzerland. Komen Race for the Cure

On Sunday, Sept. 14, a 16-member team of Manhattan College students, faculty, alumni and friends participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Central Park. Despite the wet weather, several hundred dollars were raised in support of cancer research. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For more information or to donate to the Susan G. Alumni Visit Harlem's National Black Theatre for Performance of Hattie

A great evening at the theater was had by all the members of the Manhattan College community who attended the Oct. 1 performance of Hattie – What I Need You to Know at the National Black Theatre in New York. The musical, which stars Vickilyn Reynolds, tells the story of Denver actress Hattie McDaniel, the first black performer to win an Oscar for her role as Mammy in 1939’s Gone With the Wind. Students from the Association for Black Culture and the National Society of Black Engineers were on hand for the production, along with College administrators, faculty and staff. The night was sponsored by Manhattan’s Black Alumni Council.

Men’s Basketball Schedule Announced

The Manhattan College athletic department released the complete 2008-09 men’s basketball schedule on Sept. 22 after receiving the conference itinerary from the MAAC office. The Jaspers will host 14 contests at Draddy Gymnasium and return to Madison Square Garden for a highly anticipated battle with local rival Iona on Jan. 24. Three contests during the season will be televised, and the remaining home games will be broadcast at GoJaspers.com. Read.

 

Women’s Hoops Welcomes Matt Alarcon to Coaching Staff

Matt Alarcon has joined the Manhattan College women’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant. The announcement was made on Sept. 4. Alarcon, a 2005 graduate of Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, comes to Riverdale from Velocity Sports Performance, where he worked as a sports performance coach. Read.

 

Baseball Squad Names
New Assistant Coach

Manhattan College head baseball coach Kevin Leighton announced the addition of Jason Spaulding to his coaching staff in early September. Spaulding joins the Jaspers following a decorated coaching career at the collegiate, high school and American Legion level for the past eight years. He will assist in the daily operations of the baseball office, including recruiting. Read.

Thomas Bandov '11 Honored by MAAC

Men's Soccer

Manhattan College men’s soccer striker Thomas Bandov '11 was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29. Bandov, a sophomore from Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., scored a total of three goals during the week for Manhattan, including two Saturday evening to lead the Jaspers to a 4-2 win over Howard University. He also scored the Jaspers’ lone goal in its 3-1 loss to Long Island University on Sept. 24. Read.
