Staff Convocation To
Honor Dedicated Employees

At the annual staff convocation, which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers, members of the College community will be recognized for their 25 years of service. Neptali Sanchez (physical plant) and Ann Scanlon (HEOP) will be honored. The Distinguished Lasallian Staff Award will be presented to Angelo Pinto (physical plant, retired) and the Distinguished Lasallian Administrative Award will be given to Lisa Juncaj, associate director of student financial services. Athletic Hall of Fame
Induction Ceremony

The 2008 Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6 and will honor Peter Beyer ’60, track; Jason Hoover ’97, men’s basketball; Patrick McGrath ’95, track; Dean Noll ’50, track (posthumously); Louis Ostolozaga ’81, track and field; Dine Potter ’97, track; Thomas Walraven ’76, baseball; and Carrie Wujcik-Drum ’96, softball. Two teams will also be inducted: the 1935 Penn Relays mile championship team, and the 1993 women’s softball squad. Read. College Mourns Passing
of Two Brothers

Brother John Amedy Francis Martin, F.S.C., former College trustee, director of the alumni annual giving program and director of the Christian Brothers community at Manhattan College from 1988-1996, passed away on Oct. 12 at the age of 85. Martin (pictured left) received a Master of Arts from Manhattan and was given an honorary LL.D. by the College in 1981. He was awarded a fellowship at Cornell University for science education from 1956-1958 and an Esso Foundation Fellowship at New York University for science education from 1957-1958. A member of the Executive Council of Science in the New York Archdiocese, his assignments included St. Peter’s High School, Staten Island High School, Manhattan Prep School, De La Salle Institute and La Salle Academy, where he served as director. He is survived by a sister, Mary Martin.

Brother Andrew Winka, F.S.C., a De La Salle Christian Brother for 46 years and a member of the Christian Brothers community at Manhattan College, died on Sept. 30 after a long illness. Br. Winka (pictured right) was an associate professor of chemistry at the College. Previously, he taught high school at St. Joseph Collegiate in Buffalo, N.Y; St. Michael’s High School in Sante Fe, N.M.; and Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J. He also taught in higher education at De La Salle University, Manila, the Philippines; Bethlehem University, Palestine; College of Sante Fe, Santa Fe, N.M.; and Lewis University, Romeoville, Ill. Winka is survived by his mother, Frances Winka and sisters Susan Hundertmark and Mary Anne Gears.

Jesuit Priest John Dear
To Speak at College

John Dear

John Dear, a Jesuit priest and former executive director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, will speak at Manhattan College and sign copies of his autobiography on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library. The event, sponsored by the College’s peace studies program, is free and open to the public. His autobiography A Persistent Peace: One Man’s Struggle for a Nonviolent World was released this past August, and copies will be available for sale during the event. The book follows Dear’s decades-long journey and spiritual growth, including his unpopular actions before government officials, military personnel and even hostile representatives of the church. College To Welcome Comic
Book Theorist Scott McCloud

Cartoonist and comic book theorist Scott McCloud will speak at Manhattan College on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. McCloud’s talk is the fall semester’s scheduled college writing lecture to accompany the Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, a wise, funny and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. McCloud is the author of Understanding Comics (1993), a 215-page book about comics that has been translated into more than 16 languages. He also has written Reinventing Comics (2000), a more controversial look at comics revolutions in art, culture and technology, and Making Comics (2006), an extensive look at comics storytelling techniques. College Presents a
Candlelight Christmas Celebration

The Manhattan College Singers and Orchestra will host their holiday program A Festival of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the College’s Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers, with preludes beginning at 4:00 p.m. The program is a unique and festive celebration that combines an eclectic selection of music, prayers and traditional Christmas carols.  The MC Singers will perform various pieces ranging from baroque and contemporary music to gospel, while the MC Orchestra will perform selections from Joseph Haydn’s Symphony #31. The ensembles will combine to present the Gloria and Agnus Dei from Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Midnight Mass. Read.

Civil and Environmental
Engineering Professors Receive
Grant from Department of Environmental Protection

Dr. Richard Carbonaro, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Dr. Robert Sharp, professor of civil and environmental engineering, have received a $145,000 research grant from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) to study manganese deposits in aquifier systems. Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

James Suarez, dean of the school of business, and Richard FitzPatrick, professor of management, were recently honored at the annual conference of the Association on Employment Practices and Principles (AEPP) on Oct. 2-4 in Chicago. Suarez was awarded a Lifetime Service Award in recognition of the school of business’ sustained and generous support of AEPP’s activities. FitzPatrick received the same award for 15 years of service to AEPP, for which he has served as treasurer, executive board member and conference chair. Manhattan College hosted AEPP’s conferences in 2002 and 2006 and remains one of its prime institutional sponsors.

Dr. Nicholas De Lillo, professor of mathematics and computer science, has accepted a position as reviewer of scholarly papers to be submitted for publication and possible presentation at the next annual meeting of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, Northeastern Region . The meeting is scheduled for April 24-25, 2009 at SUNY Plattsburg.

Dr. Anirban De, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, received a research grant as a co-principal investigator from the National Science Foundation titled NEESR-II: Advanced Site Monitoring and Effective Characterization of Site Nonlinear Dynamic Properties and Model Calibration. The three-year grant is for collaborative research with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and will involve faculty and student researchers from both Manhattan College and RPI.

Congratulations to several full-time and part-time members of the College community who have celebrated a recent service anniversary. Jose Lopez of residence life marks his 30th anniversary at Manhattan College in November. Fall Networking Reception

Online registration is available for the New York City Club fall networking reception on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 6:00-9:00 p.m at UBS (1285 Sixth Ave., 14th floor). The reception features Thomas D. O'Malley '63, chairman of the Manhattan College board of trustees and chairman of Petroplus Holdings AG, Europe’s largest independent oil refiner and wholesaler, with refineries in the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France and Switzerland. Hosted by UBS, the event is $40 per person and includes cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Expands JasperVision Platform

The Manhattan College athletic department has expanded JasperVision, its online video platform, for the 2008-09 academic year. Read. All men’s and women’s basketball games, along with select fall and spring home athletic contests, will be streamed live exclusively at GoJaspers.com. JasperVision is the only online destination for live and on-demand streaming video for Manhattan College patrons. Cross Country’s Matt Kaftanski ’10 Named MAAC Co-Runner of the Week

Manhattan College’s Matt Kaftanski ’10 was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Co-Runner of the Week on Oct. 13. Kaftanski, a junior from Everett, Wash., led the cross country team to a fifth-place finish in the New York Metropolitan Cross Country Championships on Oct. 10 at Van Cortlandt Park. Read.

 

Lady Jaspers Announce
2008-09 Hoops Schedule

The full 2008-09 Manhattan College women’s basketball schedule was announced on Sept. 29 by head coach Myndi Hill in conjunction with the release of the complete MAAC schedule. The Lady Jaspers will host 13 games at Draddy Gymnasium, including a regionally-televised contest against conference rival Iona on Monday, Feb. 9. Read.

 

Women’s Swimming Earns Place on CSCAA Academic All-American List for 22nd Consecutive Semester.

The Manhattan College women’s swimming team once again stood out in the classroom this past spring semester, when it ranked 52nd out of 81 Division I swim teams that qualified for the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-American status. The Lady Jaspers produced a 3.20 GPA to earn a place on the team for a 22nd consecutive semester. Read.
