Dr. Brennan O’Donnell Named Manhattan College’s 19th President

Manhattan College has named Dr. Brennan O’Donnell as its 19th president, effective July 1, at which time Br. Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C., will step down from his position after nearly 22 years of leadership. O’Donnell will become the first layperson to serve as president in the 156-year history of the College. O’Donnell is currently dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school, a college of arts and sciences with more than 3,200 students and nearly 300 faculty. He brings to Riverdale the experience of running an academic unit close to the size of Manhattan College. Prior to assuming his current role in 2004, O’Donnell spent nearly two decades at Loyola College of Maryland, where he was professor in the department of English. He also served as director of the honors program (1999-2004), where he oversaw a university-wide interdisciplinary humanities program that enrolls about 200 students under the instruction of more than 20 faculty members from seven departments. His career began as a teaching assistant in the department of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1983-1986). Read.

 

Manhattan Will Honor Brother Scanlan at 2009 Commencement; Ray Kelly ’63 To Deliver Keynote Address

Brother Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C., who will step down as president of Manhattan College later this year, will receive an honorary Doctor of Education at the 2009 Commencement on Sunday, May 17. During the ceremony, Ray Kelly ’63, commissioner of the New York City Police Department, will deliver the keynote address. Scanlan, the College’s longest-tenured president, was inaugurated on October 29, 1987. Under his leadership, Manhattan College has undergone a transformation that has it currently recognized as one of the premier Catholic institutions of higher education in the nation. Read. Local Water Conference
Returns to Manhattan College

The 8th Annual Water Conference, sponsored by the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality, will be held in Manhattan College’s Leo Hall on Wednesday, March 18 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. This year’s conference will focus on helping watershed stakeholders to form a Harlem River Working Group to work toward restoring the Harlem River, reconnecting the waterfront with the public and recreating a healthy water edge. One-Man Play Tells The Story
of the Rev. Damien de Veuster

Damien, a one-man play about the heroic missionary priest the Rev. Damien De Veuster, will be performed at Manhattan College’s Smith Auditorium on Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. The play tells the true story of how de Veuster risked his life to care for outcasts on the Hawaiian island of Moloka’i. He ministered to victims of Hansen’s disease (then called leprosy) who had been quarantined on Moloka’i without medical care. The performance is free and open to the public. Not-For-Profit Job Fair
Scheduled for April 15

Undergraduates, alumni and graduate students are all welcome to attend the not-for-profit job fair on Wednesday, April 15 from 2:00-4:00 p.m in Smith Auditorium. Attendees can speak with interested employers about job opportunities and internship positions, have their résumé reviewed and set up interviews during the fair. De La Salle Days Celebrate
Manhattan’s Founder

Manhattan College’s Sixth
Annual Relay For Life

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an overnight event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, will return to Manhattan College for its sixth year on Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 3:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m. in Draddy Gymnasium. The event has become a school and community favorite, bringing students together for the common cause of fighting cancer. We hope to raise even more money than in past years and have set our goal at $50,000 to help the estimated 97,000 New Yorkers and 1 million Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. A team has been designated for alumni and friends of Manhattan College. Engineering Professor Partners
With NYCDEP on Stormwater Management Study

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has awarded a $500,000 contract to HDR Engineering, with Manhattan College as the major subcontractor. The award is for the study of stormwater management practices within the New York City drinking water supply watershed. The duration of the study is five years. The principal investigator for Manhattan College will be Dr. Scott Lowe, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. Read.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. William Merriman, dean of the school of education, was nominated and elected to membership in the New York Academy of Public Education. The academy was founded in 1912 to provide a forum for constructive educational thinking and leadership. Merriman was inducted into the academy at the Princeton Club in New York City on Feb. 4.

Dr. Claudia Setzer, professor of religious studies, gave the opening talk at a conference on The Human Body and Resurrection at the University of Regensburg in Regensburg, Germany, in December.

Dr. Nicholas De Lillo, professor of mathematics and computer science, recently completed the paper “Simulation of Finite-State Automata Using Java 6.0, Part 2: Advanced Concepts.” It was accepted for publication in the Technical Report Series of the Graduate School of Computer Science and Information Technology, an official publication of the Ivan G. Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Services at Pace University. Part one of the paper was published in November 2008.

Dr. Powell Draper, assistant professor of civil engineering, co-authored a chapter in the book Felix Candela: Engineer, Builder, Structural Artist, which was named one of the best architecture books of 2008 by ArchNewsNow.com.

Hoops Squads Enter
MAAC Tournament

Basketball

The Manhattan College men’s basketball team begins its quest for a MAAC title in Albany, N.Y., on Saturday, March 7, when the fourth-seeded Jaspers battle No. 5 Fairfield in a 2:30 p.m. quarterfinal match-up. The Jaspers have won six of their last eight games entering the league tournament, including a dramatic one-point victory over the Stags on Feb. 27. For more basketball news, click Here.

 

Baseball Team Picked To
Finish Third By Baseball America

Manhattan College was selected to finish third in the MAAC for the 2009 campaign, according to Baseball America’s college preview issue. Jasper outfielders Kevin Nieto ’10 and Mark Onorati ’11, third baseman Chad Salem ’11 and lefty pitcher Dan Forman ’11 were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Read. Just

For the third consecutive season, Manhattan College softball player Danielle Just ’09 has been selected to the MAAC Preseason All-Conference Team. Just has earned a place on the All-MAAC First Team in each of her first three seasons.  Last year she led the Lady Jaspers with three home runs and tied for the team lead with 12 RBIs, while finishing second on the squad in runs (13), and third in batting average (.264) and hits (28). Three Manhattan Swimming
Records Fall at MAAC Swimming
and Diving Championships

Three Manhattan College swimmers broke school records on the final day of the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships held Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Mangione Aquatics Center at Loyola College in Baltimore.  Bridget Latino ’12 broke the 200-yard butterfly record in the morning and then broke it again in the evening. In addition, Catherine Chan ’10 broke the 100-yeard freestyle school mark and Matt Kaftanski ’10 established a new record in the 200 backstroke. Read.
