Dr. Salwa Ammar Named
Next Dean of Business

Dr. Salwa Ammar has been named the next dean of Manhattan College’s school of business, effective July 1. Ammar will replace Dr. James Suarez, who will step down from his position after 18 years. Since 2006, Ammar has served as dean of LeMoyne College’s school of management. During that time, she successfully led the school’s initial accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Ammar has been a highly regarded teacher at LeMoyne, where she earned tenure and promotions to associate and full professor. She served as director of the management science program, and associate director and director of the M.B.A. program. Read.

 

Vincent DeSimone ’59 To
Deliver Keynote Address at
Spring Commencement

DeSimone

Vincent DeSimone ’59, founder and chairman of DeSimone Consulting Engineers, will deliver the keynote address at Manhattan College’s 2009 Spring Commencement on Wednesday, May 20 in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. During the ceremony, DeSimone will receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering. Noted for his solutions to special structural problems, DeSimone has been cited on a number of occasions for his outstanding buildings in the United States and abroad. Among the domestic projects he has headed for his firm are: Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.; Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas; Peter B. Lewis Building at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio; Sofitel Hotel in New York; and Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn. Read. De La Salle Days Events To Feature The Faith Club Authors

Authors Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner will speak about their acclaimed book The Faith Club in Manhattan College’s Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers on Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. The event highlights the College’s De La Salle Days, an annual celebration of Manhattan’s founder, John Baptist de La Salle. The Faith Club was written by three mothers of different faiths who initially convened to write a book for their children that would highlight the connections among their religions. Only after realizing that their differences lead to misunderstandings did the trio write a memoir of spiritual reflections that allows readers to eavesdrop on their private conversations, provocative discussions and often controversial opinions and conclusions.

 

Manhattan College’s Sixth
Annual Relay For Life

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an overnight event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, will return to Manhattan College for its sixth year on Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 3:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m. in Draddy Gymnasium. The event has become a school and community favorite, bringing students together for the common cause of fighting cancer. We hope to raise even more money than in past years and have set our goal at $50,000 to help the estimated 97,000 New Yorkers and 1 million Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. A team has been designated for alumni and friends of Manhattan College. Holocaust Resource Center
Presents Music Out of Oppression

The Manhattan College Holocaust Resource Center will host a special program, Music Out of Oppression, on Monday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event, which is co-sponsored by the College’s department of fine arts, is free and open to the public. The program also commemorates Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is April 21. Music Out of Oppression features composer and lecturer Dr. Ronald Senator, his wife, pianist Miriam Brickman, and soprano Marni Nixon. The night includes a discussion and presentation of examples from Senator’s Holocaust Requiem. Brickman and Nixon will perform piano pieces, soprano solos and cabaret songs written in or about the concentration camps. Read.

 

Robert J. Christen Program
Welcomes Col. James Johnson

Col. James Johnson, Ph.D., executive director of the Hudson River Valley Institute, will speak at Manhattan College on Tuesday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. He will deliver the lecture The Hudson River: The Key to America in the American Revolution dressed in full Revolutionary War uniform. A retired army colonel, Johnson is an expert on the War for Independence in the Hudson River Valley and has written numerous essays and articles on the subject. The event, which is presented by the College’s Robert J. Christen Program in Early American History and Culture, also commemorates the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Henry Hudson, an English sea navigator who explored the New York City region and the river that would later bear his name in 1609. College Hosts 28th Annual
Engineering Awareness Program

Manhattan College’s Engineering Awareness Program, which aims to introduce high school students to potential careers in the various fields of engineering, will be held for the 28th straight year in July. The program is designed for minority and female high school students in science, engineering and SAT preparation at no cost to the students and is co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the ACE Mentorship Program of New York, as well as individual corporate sponsors. It is meant to introduce students to a wide range of engineering-related career options, with some emphasis on civil engineering. Read.

 

Not-For-Profit Job Fair
Scheduled for April 15

Undergraduates, alumni and graduate students are all welcome to attend the not-for-profit job fair on Wednesday, April 15 from 2:00-4:00 p.m in Smith Auditorium. Attendees can speak with interested employers about job opportunities and internship positions, have their résumé reviewed and set up interviews during the fair. College To Award Bonus et Fidelis Medal To Four Faculty Members

At the Faculty Recognition Convocation on Tuesday, April 21, four members of the Manhattan College faculty will receive the Bonus et Fidelis Medal, marking 25 years of dedicated service. This year’s recipients are: Dr. Besalet Basoglu, associate professor of accounting; Dr. Joan Cammarata, professor of Spanish; Dr. Joseph Capitani, professor of chemistry and biochemistry; and Dr. Richard FitzPatrick, professor of management.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Anirban De, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, delivered the invited lecture Use of Geotechnical Centrifuge to Study the Effects of Surface Explosions to the Mid-Hudson Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers in Newburgh, N.Y., this past October.

Dr. Robert Geraci, assistant professor of religious studies, gave the public lecture  In Whose Image? Cloning, Artificial Intelligence, and Human Souls at First Presbyterian Church of Katonah, N.Y., on March 8.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has awarded a $500,000 contract to HDR Engineering, with Manhattan College as the major subcontractor. The award is for the study of stormwater management practices within the New York City drinking water supply watershed. The duration of the study is five years. The principal investigator for Manhattan College will be Dr. Scott Lowe, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. Read.

Alumni Directories

Manhattan has partnered with Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI) to update alumni information, which will be collected and published in a directory available for purchase in both printed and electronic format. Directories will be mailed in July 2009.

Baseball Squad Returns
to Van Cortlandt

Baseball

After five weeks of nothing but road games, Manhattan College’s baseball team is finally back at Van Cortlandt Park and in the midst of its first homestand of the season. The Jaspers battle MAAC rival Marist College for three games on April 4-5 and host Long Island University on April 7. The Jaspers enter the Marist series with a 12-9 record. Men’s Basketball’s Darryl Crawford ’10 Named To All-MAAC Third Team

Manhattan College guard Darryl Crawford ’10 was named to the 2008-09 Men’s Basketball All-MAAC Third Team as selected by the league’s 10 head coaches. Crawford led the Jaspers by averaging 14.2 points and 1.5 steals per game during the regular season. He appeared in all 29 games, led the Jaspers in scoring nine times and was named MAAC Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 22. Read.

 

Jaspers Sweep Outdoor
Track Weekly Awards

On March 24, Milan Jotanovic ’09 of Manhattan College was named the MAAC Men’s Outdoor Track Performer of the Week, while teammate Malin Marmbrandt ’10 earned the distinction on the women’s side. Jotanovic, from Teslic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, broke his own shot put school record with a personal best 19.97m at the Baldy Castillo Invitational Track and Field Meet in Tempe, Ariz.. Marmbrandt, from Sweden, captured the bronze medal in the women’s long jump with a 5.65m mark. Read.

 

Manhattan Athletic Department Announces JasperVision Spring Broadcast Schedule

The Manhattan College athletic department has announced its spring JasperVision broadcast schedule, which features live video webcasts of the men’s and women’s lacrosse and softball teams. The Jaspers’ baseball team will also be covered through Manhattan’s internet radio feature. Read.
