College Set To Host 167th Undergraduate Commencement

Commencement

Manhattan College will award close to 700 degrees in some 40 major fields of study from its five schools in arts, business, education, engineering and science at its 167th Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 17. The ceremony will be held in Draddy Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. Read. The College’s Spring (Graduate) Commencement will take place on Wednesday, May 20 at 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. Read. In Memoriam

Manhattan College mourns the passing of four respected members of the College’s community: Anthony Scala Sr. ‘43, former member of Manhattan’s board of trustees; Dr. Mark Taylor, professor of English; John Marchi ’42, who spent 50 years as a New York state senator from Staten Island and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws by the College in 1973; and Thomas Gilbart, former director of the counseling center. A campus memorial service for Taylor will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers.

Manhattan College Honored at
National Model United Nations

Model UN

Manhattan College’s delegation won five awards at the 2009 National Model United Nations conference in New York. Representing the Islamic Republic of Iran, Manhattan received the distinguished delegation award, one of the most prestigious and highest honors at the conference. The college’s chapter also won the outstanding position papers award, and six Manhattan student participants received “peer” awards for outstanding work: Irfan Ahmed ’10 and Dan Maher ’09 in the General Assembly Plenary, Matt Spano ’09 and Andrew Tratner ’11 in General Assembly First Committee (security and disarmament affairs), and Jaclyn Ambriscoe ’09 and Amanda Scott ’10 in UNAIDS. Other members of the delegation included Grace Zawol ’12, Dominika Wilk ’11, Chris Shemanski ’11, Chris Tucci ’11, Mansoor Ahmed ’10, Kelly Dantuono ’10, Britney Hayes ’10, Caitlin Boucher ’09, Emily Kouterick ’11, Valbona Sokoli ’12, Maria Thomas ’11, Amanda Connolly ’10, Megan McCarthy ’12, Elise Rae ’09, Rudylexis Núñez ’09, and Emily Atwater ’10.

 

Manhattan Welcomes Fulbright
Scholar Vit Šisler

Vit Šisler, Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Buffett Center for International and Comparative Studies at Northwestern University, will speak at Manhattan College on Monday, May 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the Scala Room of Leo Hall. Šisler is also a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Information Science at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, where he is finishing his thesis on “Islam and Islamic Law in Cyberspace.” His research deals with the problematic of contemporary Islamic law, the relation between Islam and digital media, and the topic of educational and political video games. Šisler is the founder and editor-in-chief of Digital Islam (Here), a compound research project on Islam, the Middle East and digital media. Lasallian Conversation

The Lasallian Education Committee invites Manhattan College faculty and staff to the final Lasallian Conversation of the spring semester on Monday, May 11 at 4401 Tibbett Ave., across from the entrance to Draddy Gymnasium. A light dinner will be served at 5:15 p.m., with the Conversation to begin 30 minutes later. The Conversation provides an opportunity for individuals to share aspects of their personal story on the Lasallian experience at Manhattan College. College Hosts 28th Annual
Engineering Awareness Program

Manhattan College’s Engineering Awareness Program, which aims to introduce high school students to potential careers in the various fields of engineering, will be held for the 28th straight year in July. The program is designed for minority and female high school students in science, engineering and SAT preparation at no cost to the students and is co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the ACE Mentorship Program of New York, as well as individual corporate sponsors. It is meant to introduce students to a wide range of engineering-related career options, with some emphasis on civil engineering. Read.

 

Communication Major Wins First Prize For Research at NJCA Conference

A panel of three communication students presented their senior capstone research projects at the 13th Annual New Jersey Communication Association Conference at Kean University on March 28. These research papers were part of the communication department’s senior seminar, a core course in the new curriculum. Sarah Mulligan ’09 was awarded first place for undergraduate research. Her work “The Evolution of the Magazine: An Analysis of Digital Publications in Print Media” featured original research and media industry perspectives on the rapidly changing field of magazine publishing. Dr. Salwa Ammar Named
Next Dean of Business

Dr. Salwa Ammar has been named the next dean of Manhattan College’s school of business, effective July 1. Ammar will replace Dr. James Suarez, who will step down from his position after 18 years. Since 2006, Ammar has served as dean of LeMoyne College’s school of management. During that time, she successfully led the school’s initial accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Ammar has been a highly-regarded teacher at LeMoyne, where she earned tenure and promotions to associate and full professor. She served as director of the management science program and associate director and director of the M.B.A. program. Read.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Bruce Liby, associate professor of physics and chair of the physics department, and Ryan Scholl ’09 authored the paper “Using a Michelson Interferometer to Measure Coefficient of Thermal Expansion of Copper,” which appeared in the May 2009 issue of The Physics Teacher, a publication of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Dr. Nicholas De Lillo, professor of mathematics and computer science, completed the paper “Simulations of Finite-State Automata Using Java 6.0. Part 3: Generalizations.” It was accepted for publication in the June 2009 issue of the Technical Report Series of the Graduate School of Computer Science and Information Technology, an official publication of the Ivan G. Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Services at Pace University. Part one of the paper was published in November 2008, and part two appeared in the March 2009 issue.

Dr. Anirban De, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, delivered the invited lecture Use of Geotechnical Centrifuge to Study the Effects of Surface Explosions to the Mid-Hudson Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers in Newburgh, N.Y., this past October.

Reunion Weekend 2009

Manhattan College is proud to welcome its alumni back to Riverdale for Reunion Weekend on June 5-7. Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival

Manhattan College is offering its alumni the unique chance to experience Shakespeare at his finest at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival's production of Much Ado About Nothing on July 17.The $30 tickets include admission to the performance and a picnic of wine, cheese and sandwiches on the beautiful grounds of Boscobel in Garrison, N.Y., overlooking the Hudson River and West Point. Saratoga Day at the Races

Make plans to join us for our annual day at the races in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Friday, July 31, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Sunset racing begins with a 2:45 p.m. post time. The $95 cost per person includes admission to the track, a program and buffet lunch. Join us later in the evening for a reception hosted by Bill Chandler '70 at the Inn at Saratoga (231 Broadway). Athletic Hall of Fame Nominations

Did you know that anyone can nominate a Manhattan athlete for our Athletic Hall of Fame? Each year, we seek to induct a broad representation of qualified candidates. We recommend detailed attention when collecting and presenting biographical information to achieve the desired results in this competitive process. Nominations are due by Friday, June 5, 2009. Manhattan has partnered with Publishing Concepts Inc. to update alumni information, which will be collected and published in a directory available for purchase in both printed and electronic format. Directories will be mailed in July 2009.

John Olenowski Named
Women’s Basketball Coach

Olenowski

Manhattan College has named John Olenowski the seventh head women’s basketball coach in program history. He comes to Riverdale most recently from Long Island University, where he served as an assistant coach under Gail Striegler last season. Prior to his stint at LIU, Olenowski returned to collegiate coaching as an assistant at Saint Peter’s for the 2007-08 season. He enjoyed tremendous success during his 14 years (1979-82, 1995-2006) as head coach of the varsity girls’ basketball program at Morris Catholic High School in Denville, N.J., leading the team to a 330-89 record, including 10 Colonial Hills Conference Championships, six Morris County Championships, seven New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Sectional Championships and three NJSIAA State Championships. Megan Tice ’11 Sets New
Women’s High Jump School Record

Manhattan College’s Megan Tice ’11 set a school record in the women’s high jump on April 18 at the Larry Ellis Invitational meet at Princeton University with a 1.75m mark that qualified her for the NCAA Regional Outdoor Championships. Also setting an NCAA qualifying mark at the meet was Albert Johnson III ’12 with a second-place finish in the men’s long jump in 7.39m. Read.

Smith ’11 Earn All-Metropolitan Basketball Honors

Manhattan College guard Darryl Crawford ’10 was selected to the All-Metropolitan Division I Men’s Basketball Second Team and sophomore guard Chris Smith ’11 was named to the Third Team. The announcement was made on April 15 at the 76th Annual MET Basketball Writers Association Awards Banquet at Giants Stadium Club in East Rutherford, N.J. The duo helped lead the Jaspers to a fourth-place MAAC finish in 2008-09. Crawford averaged 14.4 points and 4.4 rebounds, while Smith added 13.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Read.

 

Chrissy Gutenberger ’12 Named MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Year

Manhattan College’s Chrissy Gutenberger ’12 was named the MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Year and also named to the All-MAAC First Team on April 23.  Additionally, teammates Keri Morrison ’10, Caralyn Hickey ’10 and Breana Leonard ’12 were named to the All-MAAC Second Team. Read.
