College Bids Farewell to
Brother President

Commencement

Twenty-two years after his inauguration as Manhattan College’s president, Brother Thomas J. Scanlan, F.S.C. (pictured above receiving an honorary Doctor of Education at the College's 167th Undergraduate Commencement), will step down at the end of June. His tenure, the longest in the College’s history, has left an indelible mark on the state of the institution, and his departure will be noted with an enduring remembrance of all he has accomplished. The College today is a different place than when Br. Thomas took office. New buildings have risen, old ones have been replaced or revitalized, and technological advancements have changed the way communication occurs among Manhattan students, faculty and the outside world. Under his leadership, Manhattan College currently is recognized as one of the premier Catholic institutions of higher education in the nation. Read.

Ray Kelly ’63 Delivers Keynote
Address at 167th Commencement

Ray Kelly

Ray Kelly ’63, police commissioner of the City of New York, delivered the keynote address at Manhattan College’s 167th Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 17 in Draddy Gymnasium. In his address, Kelly told the graduates: “There will always be those who say some problems are too big to solve, some injustices inevitable. Manhattan College graduates don’t believe in the inevitable. We don’t believe in conventional wisdom and foregone conclusions. We believe in action reinforced by faith and idealism. I know that New York and the nation can believe in the class of 2009. And I believe that with the time-tested values you’ve acquired here, you have just the tools to create a future we can all look forward to.” For a full text of the speech, click Here.

College Partners with
MillionTreesNYC To “Green” Campus

Model UN

Manhattan College has partnered with MillionTreesNYC, an ambitious initiative established by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office to plant 1 million new trees in the city by 2017. On Thursday, May 21, MillionTreesNYC moved 24 trees closer to its goal when an assortment of dogwoods, red oaks, zelkovas, black locusts and other species were planted on the Manhattan campus. Representatives of MillionTreesNYC originally scouted the campus in early March, and the College will be responsible for caring for the trees in the future. The main objective of MillionTreesNYC is to increase the tree canopy coverage of New York City for the sake of improving air quality and reducing energy costs. The partnership grew out of Br. Thomas Scanlan’s Dec. 5 presidential proclamation, which declared the College’s intent to take all feasible steps to increase it sustainability while ensuring that “green” issues are a factor in all future major decisions, policies and contracts.
