Advanced PR Students at Manhattan Receive Hands-on Experience

This semester, Pamela Poe, Ph.D., assistant professor of communications and advanced public relations instructor, provided her students with hands-on experience with service-learning at the core. Seven groups of students selected organizations, both for-profit and nonprofit, to supply free public relations consulting for the course of the semester. Each group has impacted the various organizations in their own way and overcome several obstacles, which has helped students to attain more than just a letter grade as the semester comes to a close.

The public relations consulting projects included:

  • Adopt-A-Park: Students worked with the College to purchase a park, Tibbetts Brook, in the name of Manhattan College. Their first event was Saturday, Nov. 13 and students raked leaves and cleaned up the land while enjoying snacks and raising money for a great cause.
  • American Advertising Federation (AAF): Students worked to publicize the College’s school chapter of AAF by communicating through multiple channels to the community about planned events, including the successful “Get Your Interview On” panel this past month.
  • CEC ArtsLink is an international arts organization that encourages an exchange of artists and cultural managers in the United States, as well as abroad. Students planned a mock film festival on campus that showed comedic Russian films in order to help spread artistic diversity at the College.
  • Children’s Art Carnival: This is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing arts education to children and young adults, and students created a campus campaign called “Pop Art.” The campaign consisted of multiple fundraisers and using social media to gain support from the community.
  • The Hunger Project is a nonprofit organization that works to end world hunger. Students used different media channels to raise money for the organization and had a representative speak at an informational meeting to encourage student involvement.
  • Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)/ International Association of Business Communicators (IABC): Students assisted Manhattan College with launching the first school chapter of each of these organizations through media campaigns and school events. Both organizations have received support during the semester and several events are planned for the spring.
  • She’s the First is a nonprofit organization that aims to educate girls in the developing world. Students created a campus group at Manhattan through various media channels to spread awareness. They have raised enough money this semester to sponsor two students to attend middle school and high school in Tanzania and Malawi.
