The World Wide Web (or WWW or Web) is a system of interlinked information that is accessed through the internet using a web browser.

The Web was invented in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee, and started to become popular around 1993 when the first web browsers were introduced to the public. Today the Web is an essential communication tool for businesses, governments, news agencies, non-profit organizations, and colleges & universities. By the end of 1993 there were only a few hundred webpages  - now tens of billions of webpages that make up the Web. No wonder it's easy to feel overwhelmed!

Anyone can publish information on the Web. However, no one controls the content of that information so there is not always a guarantee of accuracy. It is a good idea to carefully evaluate information you find on the Web and to use good judgment when using the Web for research.
